My Favorite Snow Day Recipes❄️
Hello and happy snowy Tuesday! I am typing this as I look out at a beautiful winter wonderland. We got about a foot of snow in our area throughout the day yesterday and I am in love! We don't get many good snows here anymore so I really like to wallow in that snowed-in feeling when I can. Of course, my favorite thing to do is cook and bake all of my coziest recipes, so I thought I'd share them in case you find yourself snowed in this week too!
To me, baking bread is the coziest activity and you just can't beat the smell of fresh bread baking on a snowy day (I have a sourdough loaf baking as I type this). I have several bread recipes on my site but the most popular two are my Honey White Bread recipe that uses just yeast, as well as a Sourdough Discard Sandwich Bread that uses sourdough discard plus a bit of yeast. They are both great and you can't go wrong with either one. Another snow day favorite is my Soft French Bread (not a sourdough recipe).
A snowy day is meant for slower cooking dishes such as my Authentic Bolognese Sauce, Simple Pot Roast, or my personal snow day favorite: Dad's Chicken and Sausage Gumbo. I actually made a big pot of Gumbo this past saturday so we have been enjoying those leftovers!
And for the sweet baked treats (what's better on a snow day??): I created this Salted Malted Chocolate Bundt Cake back during the huge snowstorm of January 2016 (if you were living in the Northern VA area then I bet you remember that snow!). This cake is a one bowl wonder - so easy and so delicious. I think I'll have to make it today. If you don't have malted milk powder you can omit it and you'll still have a delicious and moist chocolate cake.
While the snow was still falling yesterday, we made a double batch of my Sourdough Discard Chocolate Chip Cookies and they did not disappoint. Malcolm (my two-year-old) "helped" and it was quite an adventure.
Another snow day favorite that I used to always make when my older kids were little and snow days were so magical are my Glazed Vanilla Bean Scones - so much nostalgia. And of course, it doesn't get cozier than Cinnamon Rolls - I have a few recipes including Sourdough Discard Cinnamon Rolls, No-Yeast Sourdough Cinnamon Rolls, and Vanilla Bean and Brown Butter Cinnamon Rolls. I also have a triple chocolate version as well as a banana version of cinnamon rolls that are not sourdough. If you want to get really fancy and play on the snow theme, give my Sourdough Discard Star/Snowflake Bread a try.
More snow day recipe suggestions:
Hearty Beef and Barley Soup
Minestrone with Italian Sausage
Cream of Mushroom Soup
Overnight Sourdough Pancakes
Brothy Beans with Fennel and Parmesan
Dad's Classic Shepherd's Pie
Whether you're snowed in or not, I hope you'll give these recipes a try. Stay cozy!
